Looking for thing things to do in Dubai? Beyond the skyscrapers and shopping malls, there are many Dubai attractions that will surprise you. Albeit, the malls, and skyscrapers are very impressive. From desert adventures to cultural encounters, beach escapes, and luxury experiences, Dubai has it all! Dubai is the most populous city in the United Arab Emirates and is one of the most exciting cities in the Middle East to visit.

Dubai is a city of the future, to say the least. Dubai has the world’s tallest building, the world’s tallest hotel, and the world’s tallest residential building. It houses the largest shopping mall in the world, the world’s largest aquarium, and the second-largest man-made marina on earth. Dubai is a city that people should see once in their lifetime but there are plenty of things to do in Dubai that will surprise you beyond the megacity malls and skyscrapers. Dubai has beaches, desert safaris, adventure, and activities. We think that Dubai is definitely a city built for the future of tourism. It is leading the way with seven-star and other luxury hotels attached to super malls where families can do everything they want on their vacations without leaving the complex.

But there is much more to Dubai than just the shopping and the manufactured experiences. We spent a week exploring and found that there were plenty of things to do in Dubai that were actually entertaining, exciting, and a lot of fun.

1. Go Up to The Burj Khalifa

Whenever we have the chance to go somewhere high, we take it and you cannot miss going up the world’s tallest building for a view of the city. The Burj Khalifa is at the top of all Dubai attractions. It is located in the heart of the city with gorgeous views. Take the high-speed elevator up 160 stories to see awe-inspiring views of Dubai. Be warned though, it’s crowded and once you’ve had a look at the city, there’s not a lot more to do up there. It is that famous building that Tom Cruise climbed during Mission Impossible and while standing outside the viewing platform, you gain a lot of respect for the man. That takes a lot of nerve. While the experience isn’t as good as other high-rise attractions we’ve taken around the world, you can’t visit Dubai without going up the elevator. Get your skip-the-line tickets to the 124th, 125th, and 148th floors of the Burj Khalifa. Zip past the security lines for optimal timing. This tour offers easy cancellation within 24 hours of departure .The Burj Khalifa doesn’t have the wow factor of Toronto’s CN Tower or even the Calgary Tower glass floor but if there is one thing to do in Dubai it is ticking off the bucket list of going up the world’s tallest building.

2. Explore The Dubai Marina

Downtown Dubai isn’t much of a walking city, but when you make your way to the Dubai Marina, it’s your chance to stroll along the promenade. There are coffee shops and restaurants surrounding the second-largest man-made marina in the world where you can book boat tours and dinner cruises from here. It was definitely our favourite place to hang out in the evening in Dubai.

Like all things in Dubai, it too is surrounded by mammoth skyscrapers and shopping malls that take your breath away. For one of the more thrilling things to do in Dubai, make your way to the Amwaj Towers to take a zip line over the marina to the Dubai Marina Mall. Dubai does everything bigger and better and this zipline is one of the steepest and fastest in the world. Reaching speeds of 80 km an hour, you’ll soar through the air for one kilometer.

This breakfast yacht tour is a great way to experience the decadence of travel in Dubai at an affordable price where you’ll enjoy a morning cruise with breakfast. (also available for a sunset bbq cruise). You’ll sail from the marina to Blue Water Island, the Dubai Eye, and views of Jumeira Beach, The Palm Jumeirah, and the Burj Al Arab.

3.To the Beach

Dubai has fabulous sandy beaches. Like all beach destinations, there are a lot of watersports to choose from and many beach chairs or free patches of sand to set up shop for the day to catch some rays. The famous Burj Al Arab towers over a public beach. If you are rich enough to stay there, go for it! It’s Dubai’s most luxurious accommodation being a 7-star hotel.

4. Dubai Mall: Explore

I know we didn’t rave about the malls in our opening paragraph, but it is a spectacle to see them. In fact, the malls are definitely the top Dubai attractions to add to your list. The Dubai Mall is the largest shopping mall in the world with so much more than clothing stores and boutiques.The Dubai Mall houses the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo where you can even go diving with sharks, there’s a skating rink, waterfalls, and top-name brand clothing outlets where you can get lost for the day. You can even have a shark or may You can even take a gondola ride around Dubai lake just like you are transported to Venice.

5. Mall of Emirates

If you go to the Mall of the Emirates, you can go snowboarding or skiing at Ski Dubai, catch a movie or do some shopping. There are malls galore in Dubai and many hotels offer free shuttles to visit them where you can freely spend your hard-earned money. One of the coolest things we saw before going to Dubai was Ski Dubai – an indoor ski resort. Coming from Canada, it is totally a novelty to be able to ski indoors.Dubai takes everything to the next level and the malls of Dubai have everything you could possibly want in a holiday destination. From skiing to ice skating, water parks, and even scuba diving in a massive fish tank, you name it, Dubai has thought of it. You never have to leave the mall! Plus, you can relax in air conditioning to escape the Dubai heat as the desert temperatures soar outside.

6. Dubai Fountain Show

Just like the Bellagio in Vegas, Dubai has its own waterfall show at the Dubai Fountain. Only the fountain show in Dubai is bigger and better making it the top of all fountain shows in the world. Make sure to add going to the Dubai fountain to your list of must-see Dubai attractions.

Each night a display of water and light runs for 10 minutes every half an hour until midnight. The songs, light show, and choreography change again and again so you never have to see the same show twice. Pick a seat and have a drink at one of the restaurants on the lake where the show is located or get there 10 minutes early for a front-row premium spot right at the fence. I really enjoyed the show myself.

7. Take a Scenic Flight

A scenic flight also offers amazing views of the Dubai skyline and the Persian Gulf coast. We found that Dubai was so spread out it was difficult to really take in the views of the skyscrapers from different vantage points, but a flight fixed that problem. Being on a scenic flight allowed me to see all of the magnificent modern architecture in the city.

8. Palm Jumeirah

Dubai is a city that’s definitely meant to be seen by air. A bird’s eye of The Palm Jumeirah is astounding. This engineering feat is difficult to comprehend as Dubai has built an extra 650km of coastline for its residents to work and play. There’s also a map of The World with hundreds of man-made islands waiting to be developed 14 km off the shore of Dubai. The Palm Jumeirah is a wonder of the modern world. This archipelago of islands juts out into the Persian Gulf and is completely man-made.

9.Aquaventure Waterpark

Everyone wants to catch a glimpse of Atlantis Dubai, but you don’t have to break the bank to stay there. Visitors can buy a pass to play in Dubai’s top-rated attraction. It is the world’s largest waterpark with world-record-holding waterslides for thrill-seekers, and it houses Dubai’s largest aquarium. Just make sure you DON’T swim with the dolphins. That’s not cool. The Lost Chambers Aquarium houses 65,000 marine animals.

Dubai Water Parks

Dubai is the epicenter of water parks. Perhaps it’s the hot Dubai heat or just the sheer amount of money that goes through the city, but each water park keeps getting bigger and better. Here are a few of the top water parks in Dubai.

Wild Wadi – This is the original Dubai water park located beside Jumeirah Beach Hotel and Burj Al Arab
Laguna Waterpark – Located on the beach in La Mer it Laguna Water Park has four zones for fun, relaxation, slides, surf and splash.

If you aren’t staying at the Atlantis, you can book this Speedboat tour to take in the skyline as you cruise along the Persian Gulf to see Palm Jumeirah and Atlantis Hotel, and Bluewater Island.

10. Wander Through The Souks

Dubai is a new city and it’s difficult to believe that there is somewhere that feels old, but the souks located in the old town actually do feel a lot like other souks we’ve visited in the Middle East. The Souks are divided up and if you take a tour of Dubai, you will easily be able to visit many Dubai attractions in the old city including the gold souk, and the spice souks, and pick up some fantastic souvenirs.The souks were fascinating to visit. They are busy and filled with shoppers. We were told that 20% of the world’s gold passes through the Gold Souk. I can only imagine how rich the people were walking these alleys. Get lost in the alleyways and streets that you can get lost in while shopping and exploring your way through a fast-disappearing Middle Eastern culture in Dubai.

11. Jumeirah Mosque

Jumeirah Mosque is the only mosque open to non-Muslims in Dubai making it one of the top Dubai attractions. We visited this on an organized tour, but you can book one of the guided tours that happen daily at 10 and 2 pm. (It is closed on Fridays). Make sure you are properly dressed when visiting any mosque or place of worship keeping legs and shoulders covered.

12.Dubai Creek

Make sure to take the water taxi along Dubai Creek, it’s a great affordable way to explore the old part of town. Dubai Creek is divided into two parts, Deira and Bur Dubai. We took a full-day tour of Dubai and it really allowed us to see a lot of the highlights of the city and the top Dubai attractions including this historic part of the city. Our favorite part of Dubai was going into the historic city.

From Mosques to the Dubai Heritage Village, to river cruises and Bazaars, it is a great place to spend an afternoon. This guided walking tour allowed us to discover Old Dubai, the Spice Souk, Bur Dubai Souk, and the Fahidi district. We also had the chance to take a boat ride an abra boat, the oldest transportation in Dubai.

13.Desert Conservation Reserve

If you want to see some wildlife, you are almost guaranteed to see Arabian oxen (oryx) gathering at the watering hole on a Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve Tour. There are plenty of camels walking through the desert (all are domesticated) but they are still amazing to see, and you may catch sight of birds of prey. The tour we took offered a birds of prey show in the desert. We didn’t love this part of it as we aren’t fans of birds in captivity, but we did love seeing the animals in their natural habitat.

14. Falcon Show

We did not enjoy the birds of prey show learning how they raise falcons. Using falcons is an extinct way of hunting in Dubai and is simply cruel to keep birds locked in a cage with a bag over their head simply for the pleasure of watching them catch pieces of meat that they throw in the air. It’s not my idea of fun and I wouldn’t recommend it. But the conservation area alone was fantastic.

Nearly five years after he was arrested at a South African airport, Mozambique’s former finance minister has lost a last-ditch court appeal and faces extradition to the United States over a $2 billion corruption scandal related to loans to Mozambican state-owned companies.

U.S. prosecutors allege that Manuel Chang, Mozambique’s finance minister from 2005 to 2015, was involved in a scheme that ultimately defrauded American and international investors. The huge sums of money leant by international banks to Mozambique — and guaranteed by the Mozambique government — were meant for a series of maritime projects but disappeared in bribes, kickbacks and other illegal payments, it’s alleged.

Chang is accused of receiving about $17 million in bribes in the “hidden debts” scandal. He was indicted in the Eastern District Court of New York in 2018.

The more than $2 billion was meant to be for the purchase of naval vessels, the building and maintenance of shipyards and various other projects to help the country’s fishing industry, but were never used for those purposes, according to the allegations. The scandal caused a financial crisis in Mozambique. When the loans were disclosed in 2016, the International Monetary Fund withdrew its support for the southern African country.

Chang has been held in jail in South Africa since December 2018, when South African police arrested him at the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg at the request of U.S. authorities before he took a flight to Dubai.

He brought numerous court cases and appeals in an attempt to avoid extradition to the U.S.

Chang ran out of legal options in South Africa when the country’s apex Constitutional Court denied applications from him and the Mozambican government to appeal against a lower court’s ruling that he must be extradited to the U.S.

Chang and the Mozambican government were arguing that he should be extradited to Mozambique.

The Constitutional Court made the ruling on Wednesday and provided a copy of the judgment to the AP on Thursday. In its judgment, the court said permission to appeal against a ruling ordering Chang’s extradition to the U.S. “must be refused” because there was a “lack of reasonable prospects of success.”

A Mozambican civil society group, the Forum de Monitoria do Orcamento (FMO), supported Chang’s extradition to the U.S., arguing in court that he was unlikely to face real justice in his home country.

In December, several others accused in the scandal were convicted and sentenced in Mozambique. They included Ndambi Guebuza, the son of former Mozambican President Armando Guebuza, who was sentenced to 12 years in jail for illegally receiving an estimated $33 million from the corrupt dealings.

Ten other people were found guilty on similar charges and were all sentenced to more than 10 years in jail.

South Africa’s Department of Justice and Chang’s lawyers did not immediately respond to questions from the AP about when Chang might be extradited to the U.S.

In 2021, Swiss bank Credit Suisse agreed to pay at least $475 million to British and American authorities to settle allegations of bribery and kickbacks related to the bank’s involvement in the loans.

Joy for mother of autistic twins as Dubai clinic pledges support

A mother of autistic twins spoke of her joy after a Dubai health clinic chief stepped in to offer support after hearing about her financial challenges.

Ambreen Suhaib, 35, told The National last month how she and her husband, who live in Dubai, spend more than Dh300,000 ($81,600) a year to provide the best possible care for their nine-year-old boys, Ahmed and Hadi.

She called for insurance cover for vital therapies to be made more widely available to parents.

Her views echoed those of Mohammed Al Emadi, director of Dubai Autism Centre, who in March said insurance companies should be mandated to provide cover for key autism treatment to ease the financial burden on families.

Aviv Clinics Dubai will assist the family through its Aviv Cares initiative, which includes a three-day evaluation for children aged between 4 and 18 with neurological conditions such as autism, as well as cerebral palsy, strokes and traumatic brain injuries.

The assessments look at cognitive and physical abilities using a range of tests, including advanced brain imaging tests, to identify the root cause of the child’s condition and determine suitable treatment options.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, neurocognitive training, occupational therapy, and physiotherapy are core components of subsequent treatment, which is delivered free to those children found to be eligible.

Lifeline for family

Ahmed and Hadi will be evaluated under the programme.

“It’s going to be a huge financial and emotional relief for us,” Ms Suhaib said.

“Getting such detailed assessments by professionals requires a hefty amount of money, which obviously is a lot of pressure when you have multiple children with a condition,” she said.

She is grateful that her children will benefit from further medical expertise.

“The procedure at Aviv Clinics is really detailed and they are very precise,” she said.

“After the assessment, they will let us know if oxygen therapy can help our twins or not. We are humbled beyond words for this help.”

The clinic has so far identified 16 children eligible for treatment.

“We saw The National’s article on Ahmed and Hadi and felt we could support them. So the goal is to give back, and to continue to work for insurance cover to make this into a more inclusive society,” said Craig Cook, chief executive of Aviv Clinics.

“I say this not only as the CEO of the clinic but as a parent of a non-neurotypical child myself.

“The key is to correctly diagnose the child, and for that we have a dedicated paediatric and youth team.”

An in-depth analysis will follow the assessments, then results are shared with parents before an individualised programme for each child is designed around the results.

“It’s a unique protocol that combines hyperbaric oxygen therapy with tailored cognitive training and other adjunct therapies.

“It has shown promising results for individuals with autism and cerebral palsy,” Mr Cook said.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurised chamber, which increases oxygen levels in the blood and brain.

Aviv said the value of individual treatment programmes can be up to Dh200,000, with patients typically seeing results within three months.

What is autism?

Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition affecting verbal and non-verbal communication, social interaction and behaviour.

About one in 100 children globally are believed to be on the autism spectrum, the World Health Organisation says.

In April 2021, the UAE cabinet approved the National Policy for People with Autism.

It set out ways to provide people with autism with easy access to services, to ensure their inclusion in education and wider society and to train more qualified professionals while bolstering community awareness.

Mother’s inclusive vision

Ahmed and Hadi were found to have moderate to severe autism after a diagnosis in 2017.

Since the diagnosis, Ms Suhaib and her husband have spent a fortune on care centres – moving their children from one to another in search of the best support.

They tried to secure insurance for the cost of treatment but were told the therapies their children need almost every day are not covered.

“The financial aspect of autism is the most draining and frustrating part for a parent, because the only therapies that can help your children are not covered,” she previously told The National.

Ms Suhaib also believes more work must still be done to create a more inclusive society for those with autism, as there remains a lack of understanding and acceptance.

“Inclusion is considered a favour, not a right, for autistic children and much work is needed for that,” she said.

She called for more awareness campaigns to help better integrate people with autism into everyday life.

Ozempic face’: Doctors warn of hidden side effects of rapid weight loss with type 2 diabetes drugs

While Ozempic, Saxenda, Wegovy or Mounjaro may effectively aid weight loss, the post-usage side effects may outweigh the benefits.

Dubbed as the ultimate rapid weight loss solution, a viral TikTok trend for type 2 diabetes drugs has taken the world by storm. However, the alarming truth remains concealed beneath the surface.

Discontinuing the use of Ozempic, Saxenda, Mounjaro or Wegovy, commonly recommended for managing type 2 diabetes or obesity, can unleash a host of unfavourable side effects, UAE-based doctors revealed to Arabian Business.

The TikTok hype caused a global shortage in the lifesaving medicine for diabetes patients earlier this year, including in the UAE, after being sold at pharmacies without prescription at exorbitant prices as people hopped on the TikTok bandwagon to lose weight quickly.

Ozempic face’

“Ozempic face” is one of the common side effects associated with the type 2 diabetes drug, which refers to the sagging and ageing of facial skin as the drug affects skin elasticity.

The term, which has been widely used on TikTok, has raised concerns among many who are taking these drugs.

“Weight loss can cause dermatological changes and shrinking because the fat that stretches and cushions the skin is no longer in place,” Dr. Mustafa Ghura, Specialist General and Bariatric Surgeon at Abu Dhabi’s Burjeel Day Surgery Centre in Al Reem Island, told Arabian Business.

“Structural integrity is affected when weight loss affects the skin’s ability to retract.”

Board-certified Plastic Surgeon Gary Motykie said in a TikTok video posted in February that rapid weight loss or weight loss through drugs like Ozempic affect the face just as they do the body.

“The thing about rapid weight loss or things like Ozempic, is whatever happens to your body will also happen to your face,” Motykie said at the time, “So what they’re saying is a lot of loss of facial fat volume, volume in the face is also going away.

“It is not necessarily a great look, because everybody knows as we get a little bit older and we lose volume in our face, we tend to look gaunt, tired, and older.”

Signs of rapid ageing such as wrinkles, loose skin or a hollowed-out appearance may be seen in some people taking Ozempic. In addition, it increases their risk of lipodystrophy, a problem with how the body accumulates and stores fat.

“‘Ozempic face’ is a rather derogatory phrase to describe the various effects of rapid significant weight loss on the facial appearance, including extra facial skin, hollow cheeks, or the apparent look of ageing,” Ajith Kumar, Consultant Endocrinologist at Medeor Hospital Dubai, told Arabian Business.

Ghura warned that those taking Ozempic may be “unable to prevent facial side effects,” but can minimise them by reducing the dosage, opting for a different medication, drinking at least 1 litre of water per day, improving protein intake, or using dermal fillers.

“This is not a medical term and should not be used, as it adds to the stigma and discrimination associated with the diagnosis of obesity,” Kumar said.

Weight regain

Losing weight on Ozempic is just as easy as gaining it back once you stop taking it.

Aside from diabetics, these drugs are often prescribed to those grappling with obesity to help them kick-start their weight loss journey. While the results of these medicines are very quick and highly effective, it is important to note that they work to regulate blood sugar and curb one’s appetite. Discontinuing the medicine can mean that one’s appetite may revert back to normal, resulting in overeating and potentially weight gain.

A 2022 study, which examined the changes in body weight and metabolic risk factors of 1,961 participants one year after taking Ozempic, found that weight regain was a common occurrence after they stopped taking the medicine and that some experienced increased cravings and blood sugar spikes.

“Once you stop taking these medications, the body will gradually revert to its previous state. The body’s metabolism and energy levels will return to their previous state and the patient may experience an increase in appetite and weight gain,” said Ghura.

“Those who stop these effective injectable GLP1 agents tend to have gradual weight regain,” Kumar said.

This is why doctors encourage patients to use the drug in conjunction with a healthy diet and regular exercise for both optimal results and prolonged weight control after discontinuing the medication.

Obesity is becoming more prevalent worldwide, with estimates predicting that over 4 billion will be obese or overweight within the next 12 years, according to the World Obesity Federation.

“While taking these medications, patients should make lifestyle changes that will help them maintain their weight loss once they stop the medication. This may involve adopting healthier eating habits, a regular exercise routine, and managing stress,” said Ghura.

According to Kumar, there is no one ideal duration to suit all patients.

“Generally, the duration of the initial clinical trials on the efficacy and safety of these effective injectable GLP1 agents have been 1 to 2 years. Hence, it is expected that the treatment be continued for 1 or 2 years,” Kumar explained, adding that however continuous treatment is evolving, especially for those who experienced weight regain after drug withdrawal.

Increased risk of thyroid cancer

In clinical trials with rodents, Ozempic and other similar medicines were seen to cause thyroid tumours, including thyroid cancer.
