Obituary: Journalist Zahid Malik passes away

journalist, publisher of a newspaper and author Zahid Malik passed away here on Thursday after a protracted illness at the age of 79. He is survived by three sons and a daughter.

He was laid to rest at the H-8 Graveyard. A large number of people including Minister for Information Pervaiz Rashid, Leader of the House in Senate Raja Zafarul Haq, Senator Farhatullah Babar, Prime Minister’s adviser Sartaj Aziz diplomats from China, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisian and Palestine also attended the funeral ceremony. Representatives of the Chinese embassy also laid a floral wreath at the grave.

Born on October 5, 1937, Malik started his career as a civil servant. After his retirement as a joint secretary in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Malik launched a monthly Urdu news and views magazine Hurmat in 1980 and later started English-language daily Pakistan Observer. He was the Editor-in-Chief and publisher of the newspaper.

He authored a number of books. He received a Writers Guild of Pakistan First Prize for his book ‘Public Relations’ which was first published in Urdu in 1971. He also wrote ‘Mazameen-i-Quran-i-Hakeem’ a classification of verses of the Holy Quran which was translated into English, French and German.

President Mamnoon Hussain and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif expressed deep grief over the death of Malik.
