They are the first hours of Monday, May 26. An air attack that Israel says that it is aimed at a militant control center has just arrived at an old school where Shelttering were. Eighteen children were killed in the attack, according to local emergency services. And this scene, or a girl who tries to escape the flames is about to become a new symbol of the toll of war in the youngest of Gaza. We interviewed witnesses and obtained an unprecedented video of the sequelae of the attack. And we find the girl. His name is Hanin al-Wadie. The 5 -year -old girl survived but lost both her parents and her younger sister in the attack, according to other relatives. Parts of your body are very burned. Hussein Mohsen, who directs one of Gaza’s ambulance services, was the one who rescued Hanin and helped confirm his identity. Mohsen said a metal door, hot red heat separated him from the girl. We find Hanin recovering from second and third grade burns at the Al-Ahli Arab Hospital in northern Gaza. When Israeli military operations intensified last month, she and her family tokyo refuge at school. Hanin’s uncle, who is a trained nurse, is taking care of her now. Another young woman, Ward al-Sheikh Khalil, who was pursued in some media reports such as the one that ran through the flames, was also injured in the attack. Mohsen told us that he also rescued her from a pile of debris. Ward, who is 5 years old, was interviewed by a journalist who worked for the State News Agency of Türkiye later that day. She talked about how her mother and five brothers were killed in the strike. They were among 31 victims in total, according to Gaza’s emergency services. It is an uncle if the dead included combatants or militants. Hamas has hidden among civilians before. The Israeli army did not explain when he was contacted by the New York Times about the details of the attack. He referred to his only public statement about the attack, saying that in his effort to attack a militant command and control center, he had numerous steps to mitigate the risk of damaging civilians, including the use of precise ammunition. Our analysis of subsequent images showed fragments of a guided American bomb that the Israeli army has constantly used in Gaza. The GBU-39 are designed to attack objectives with greater precision. In this school site, more than half of the victims were children, which increased a growing part of the deaths among the youngest generation in Gaza. The Israeli army also refused to prepare more about the choice of the weapon and the large number of victims among children. Hanin faces a long recovery. For now, she continues to heal with her uncle by her side.
