IPL Tournament

There’s less than a month to go for the IPL to roll over but there still isn’t any details about the schedule of the tournament which will see 60 games. The delay reportedly is because of Covid-19-related travel restrictions between the emirates.

A report in Cricinfo states, the plan is to host 21 of the 56 group-stage games each in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and 14 in Sharjah, with the playoffs in the first two emirates.

Kolkata Knight Riders and defending champions Mumbai Indians are in Abu Dhabi which means they will have to cross the border multiple times, adding to the headaches related to travel restrictions between the emirates.

Mandatory checks have been ramped up at the border after there was a spike in the number of cases, making travel into Abu Dhabi more time-consuming than before.

The report stated that the IPL Governing Council members are in touch with the Emirates Cricket Board – headed by Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, the UAE’s minister of culture, youth and social development, to try and get the matter resolved at the earliest.

Matt Boucher, the CEO of Abu Dhabi Cricket, believes that the matter is not as grave as it seems and can be resolved soon.

“At the border, it’s either a DPI test or a PCR test, and it’s purely to protect the population of Abu Dhabi. Many hundreds of people are using the border every day, and it’s certainly not a hassle or an issue,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “It just has to be, of course, tailored into the event schedule with rotational testing. But the teams need to be tested in accordance with the protocols of the event, the UAE government, and the BCCI protocols for the event. And if those are in line with the testing procedures at the border, then the facilitation will take place.”

As nearly 100 employees went back to work in the office of a Dubai media company

As nearly 100 employees went back to work in the office of a Dubai media company, managers found a way to avoid awkwardness around social distancing — color-coded bracelets indicating how staff want to be greeted.

At the reception of Create Media Group, employees can choose between green bracelets, to show fist bumps are fine, yellow ones to indicate they can chat without touching and red bands to keep a distance from others.

“Anybody can walk into the reception, they pick one of those bands up and they put that on and it gives a very clear signal to anyone else who is interacting with them on how close to get,” said Tom Otton, managing director at Create Media Group.

Individuals may have differing views on how to deal with COVID-19.

Royal Challengers Bangalore reached Dubai on Friday ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020

Royal Challengers Bangalore reached Dubai on Friday ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020, slated to begin on September 19. The team will head straight to isolation at their hotel before beginning a three-week training camp in the UAE from August 29.
While the majority of the team flew in from Bangalore, skipper Virat Kohli underwent his final testing in Mumbai before jetting into Dubai on a private flight. He was soon united with his RCB teammates and gave the thumbs up from his balcony at the Waldorf Astoria.
In RCB statement read: “RCB team will start a 3-week camp with Indian and International Players in collaboration with Director of Cricket, Mike Hesson, and Head Coach, Simon Katich from August 29 onwards.” Initially scheduled to start in March, the 2020 edition of the IPL was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Now, the 13th edition of the IPL will be played from September 19 to November 10, across three venues in the UAE – Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Dubai.

The ongoing pandemic has had dramatic impact on property markets.

The ongoing pandemic has had dramatic impact on property markets. The rental market too has not been left unscathed – current rentals have not just slowed to a crawl, but have in fact ground to a halt and even contracting.

And rents have been falling as tenants struggle to pay their dues. Tenants too are looking to move into similar-sized properties at lower rents.

The landlords are now caught in a rut, unable to find an escape out of the situation. The property market has suffered over the past five years after a period of expansion, as there have been dramatic changes in people’s mindsets and something unprecedented for such a short time period.

Saving grace?
While opting for a holiday home, do not be fooled by unrealistic projections. This category isn’t into magic solutions. But the landlord can be reasonably sure that the property as an asset will not depreciate and still be able to get a high single-digit return.

Most importantly, the possession of the property always remains with the owner – there is no need to worry about cheques not going through or tenants not leaving. On average, expect between 15-40 per cent more than what long-term rentals can fetch.

Check around
Ensure selecting the a management company to work with, do the homework. There are many good ones and each with its own strength. Visit the office and get to know their team, because they will be handling the guests.

Keep in mind managing holiday homes is a hospitality business and not a real estate game. Ask the question that if you are going on a vacation, would this management company be able to make the stay a comfortable one.

Dubai musician Fahmil on his humbling rise to popularity

It has been an exhilarating journey from small gigs in coffee shops to where I am today as the
lead singer of ‘On the rocks’ thanks to the loyalty and unwavering support of my audience. I have had the privilege of performing at many popular venues across Dubai and overseas. From private functions to corporate gigs both locally and internationally I have been lucky to connect with a diverse audience with varied age groups.

There are many highlights in my career so far but to name a few would be having the honour of opening for Bollywood’s leading music director duo Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravjiani. I also had the privilege of performing pfor the legendary Ghulam Ali and shared the stage with popular artists in the Indian music industry including Gopi Sunder, Deepak Dev, A.R Rahman’s lead guitarist Keba Jeremiah, and Sana Moidutty. It was truly a humbling experience! I was lucky to be associated with the music launch of Baahubali 2 in Dubai and performing at Dubai’s prestigious ‘Sikka Art Fair’.

Opening for Ankit Tiwari at the Yas Mega Mela and being a part of the opening act for the renowned Shankar Ehsan and Loy was an unforgettable experience.

The current situation changed the dynamics of the entertainment industry but I have been very blessed to have the opportunity to perform virtually for well established founding institutions synonymous with art ,music and culture like Sangit Kala Kendra in Mumbai and Sangit Kala Mandir in Kolkota that boasts two and a half decades of showcasing eminent national and International talent.

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine to perform for these institutions that saw the likes of legends such as Jagjit Singh, Mohammed Rafi,Kishore Kumar ,Sonu Nigam, Arijit Singh to name a few.

Most recently I virtually performed for Faisal Kapadia from the popular Pakistani band ‘Strings’, this just shows that music has no boundary.

The Lockdown has not slowed me down one bit, on the contrary, I have reached an even wider audience and gained the love and support of listeners from all over the world through virtual
performances both private and corporate.

At this moment in time my biggest accomplishment is the release of my second original composition after ‘Oye Rabba’ called Kehta hai Dil also launched by none other than Zee Music. I am very grateful that it garnered a fabulous response within a short span of time. There is no stopping for me. My primary purpose is to keep entertaining my wonderful audience through my music and trying to connect with them either live or virtually ensuring that they get nothing but the best performance because they are worthy of it.

Analysts said that the inflow of foreign investments into the emirate’s vital sector could pick up in the near future

Analysts said that the inflow of foreign investments into the emirate’s vital sector could pick up in the near future because the greenback is projected to weaken further.

Since the dirham is pegged to the US dollar, the UAE currency follows any fluctuation in the dollar. The dollar, hence dirham also, has weakened by 12.2 per cent against the euro in the past five months, falling from 1.06 on March 20 to 1.19 on August 18. Similarly, the dollar has lost 15.78 per cent against the UK’s pound. This effectively made buying property or any other assets in the UAE cheaper by over 12 per cent and 15 per cent for European and UK investors.

“Since mid-March, investors from Switzerland, the UK, Germany, and Italy have been able to take advantage of gains made by the Swiss franc, sterling and the euro, as the US dollar weakened over the past four months,” said Sean McCauley, CEO of Devmark.

“Subsequently, development projects in Dubai have, in effect, become 14.8 per cent and 11.2 per cent cheaper depending on whether you are buying in euros or sterling. Indeed, UK investors, for example, buying in pounds could now save over Dh185,000 when buying a one-bedroom luxury apartment, at the Address Jumeirah Resort, once compared with the exchange rates at the beginning of March,” added McCauley.

According to Reidin, the total value of real estate transactions in the Dubai residential market still closed just shy of Dh10 billion in the second quarter of 2020 despite the lockdown. Although transaction value is down by 40 per cent year-on-year, the volume of transactions was marginally up in May and June.

“Many market watchers are predicting that the dollar will soften by a further 1.75 per cent by the end of this year, so it could be fairly safe to assume that Dubai’s property market will benefit from these financial market dynamics, for some time to come,” added McCauley.

Analysts that the uncertainty surrounding US economic recovery and US stimulus package are weighing on the greenback.

“There is a strong momentum for investors to want to sell the dollar,” said Juntaro Morimoto, an analyst at Sony Financial Holdings, pointing that the greenback has been declining since last month.

Dubai, here we come: Israelis may not yet be able to make a beeline for Dubai’s chintzy malls and Abu Dhabi’s golden sands (and ATMs)

Dubai, here we come: Israelis may not yet be able to make a beeline for Dubai’s chintzy malls and Abu Dhabi’s golden sands (and ATMs), but that has not stopped a gaggle of newspapers from rounding up dispatches from the United Arab Emirates, full of hope for flourishing ties with Israel’s newest regional buddy.

Both major tabloids, Israel Hayom and Yedioth Ahronoth, feature front pages with breathlessly buoyant reports from the Gulf state.
“You’re from Israel? Ahlan, welcome,” reads the large front page headline in Yedioth in a strange pidgin of Hebrew, Arabic and English (Nu, nisht Yiddish?).
“It seems to me that the news of the peace deal forming raised the level of Israeli joy to new heights,” writes Yaniv Halil, the paper’s correspondent who swiftly made for Dubai. “And it seems the level of excitement in Dubai yesterday was similar, if not even greater than that of the Israelis. Every person I spoke to yesterday in Dubai expressed open happiness over the agreement and then showered me with questions about Israel and Israelis. With the heat a blistering 42 degrees in the shade, the news of the historic peace came like a cool and refreshing slushie.”
Israel Hayom’s Eldad Beck gets the same vibe, though naturally the paper runs a picture not of Beck enjoying the Gulf heat, but rather of editor Boaz Bismuth in the Emirates holding up a copy of the paper in 2010, a reminder that Israelis haven’t exactly been strangers to the UAE before now. Beck notes that he too had been to the UAE several times before.
“But still, there was always a need to downplay my Israeliness. The openings toward Israel were expressed behind closed doors, in hiding. So I was surprised by the warmth expressed toward me over the weekend by an Emirati diplomat, when I presented myself as a reporter for Israel Hayom. ‘Ahlan wasahlan Beck,” she greeted me excitedly when I began to speak to her in Arabic. ‘We’ve waited for this day and it’s finally here.”
