Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup: Second podium of the season for Clément Mateu at the Hungaroring

After two consecutive weekends in Austria, Clément Mateu headed to Hungary to compete in the third round of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup.

With a podium finish last week, Clément Mateu as well as the HEXIS and Martinet by Almeras teams are calmly approaching the Hungarian weekend. Hostilities kick off on Friday with a rainy free practice session. The driver of the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup N. 21 quickly found his marks on the Hungarian turnstile and set the 3rd fastest time in the Pro-Am class.

Qualifying takes place the next day on a dry track. The first part of the session is not optimal, but the boss of the HEXIS group does not let himself be defeated and improves his first two partials on his second set of tires, but the time lost in the third sector costs him the 2nd Pro- time. Am and he had to settle for the 4th fastest time in 1: 49.786.

The weather conditions were very uncertain on Sunday but the race was still contested on a dry track. From 4th Pro-Am place on the grid, Clément Mateu has his competitors in sight. A few laps later, his direct competitor, Philipp Sager, gets trapped on the wet astroturf and hits the wall at the exit of the last corner. The race is then neutralized. On the restart, Clément Mateu managed to keep pace with his teammate at Martinet by Alméras, Stéphane Denoual, and finished on the third step of the Pro-Am podium.

This second podium in a row allows the HEXIS driver to make a good accounting operation in the championship. It will return to the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup paddock from July 31 to August 2, on the Silverstone circuit.

400,000 households enrol in Dubai Electricity and Water Authority’s energy conservation programme

Around 400,000 households in Dubai have enrolled in the energy conservation programme that was first launch by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) in October 2018, the utility service provider announced on Friday.

Called ‘My Sustainable Living Programme’, the initiative is part of Dewa’s Smart Living initiative aimed at raising awareness and helping customers manage their use of electricity and water, without the need to contact Dewa. The online programme allows residential customers to regularly monitor their electricity and water spending and compare with an average home with efficient consumption. Users have a customised dashboard, where they can configure their consumption and browse personalised saving tips.

Some of the energy-saving tips include how to fix the leaks in showers and faucets — Dewa noted a dripping tap can waste more than 5,500 litres of water a year. electrical appliances — such as washing machine — during peak hours or between 12pm (midday) to 5pm during summer to reduce consumption and protect the environment.

Dewa said ‘My Sustainable Living Programme’ is part of an integrated strategy to raise awareness on the importance of rationalising consumption and involving all society members in efforts to protect the environment and preserve natural resources.

COVID-19 travel chaos: Indian student on tourist visa who was to join family in UAE offloaded from flight to Dubai

When he was among the first Indians to get a tourist visa issued by Dubai last week, Nihal Mubarack’s heart filled with hope and happiness as he was joining his parents and siblings in the UAE.

However, the medical student, who was stranded in Kerala, and his family in Sharjah, never imagined what he would encounter.

Nihal and another co-passenger, Shamna Kasim, a young pharmacist, who was flying to join her husband and family in the UAE, were offloaded minutes before they were set to board a flight to Dubai from Calicut International Airport.

Speaking over phone to Gulf News, which had covered his family’s delight when he received his visa last week, Nihal said his initial concern if he would be allowed to fly vanished when he was issued a boarding pass and received the immigration clearance stamp. However, when he was at the waiting lounge of the boarding gate, the airline’s staff told Nihal and co-passenger Shamna, who was also travelling on a tourist visa, that they cannot board the flight.

“It happened just minutes before we were to board the flight. The immigration officials suddenly informed the airline staff that they cannot allow us to fly,” said Nihal.

He said the duo were then asked to return to the departure area and their boarding pass and immigration stamp were cancelled.

“We tried to argue that the UAE government has no issue in letting us fly into the country and I even showed them the report that featured my visa story. But they said the Indian government is not allowing people on tourist and visit visas to fly to the UAE.”

The offloaded passengers had to wait for another 45 minutes and they returned home after receiving their checked-in baggage.

Taylor Byron Barr hasn’t always been fortunate enough to do what he loves for a living. In 2010, right after he graduated from college, he began working in corporate America. “It paid well, but my heart wasn’t in it,” he says. “I wasn’t following my heart.” Soon after that, Taylor began putting in place plans for his transition. “I wanted to be creative, work with my family, and feel freedom,” he declared. Today, Taylor is a successful male model, having worked with popular brands like Remy Martin and Member’s Only. He’s also built a real estate development company that buys and sells millions of dollars of property every year.

What’s next for him? “I’m working on breaking into acting. I’m lucky enough to be working with great people who know their stuff, great mentors,” he smiles after speaking. Taylor doesn’t think people should bet against him, and we tend to agree with him.

Dubai home sales plunge; job cuts, expat repatriation to hurt market

The Dubai housing market continued to take a hit from the coronavirus pandemic, with sales activity plunging by more than half in June, even after real estate agents and other businesses reopened from the nationwide lockdown, research shows.

A total of 4,459 homes were sold in Dubai during Q2 2020, down 48.8 percent compared to Q1 2020. Sales of ready-to-move-in homes fell 56.6 percent in Q2 compared Q1 and 43.6 percent compared to same time last year, according to ValuStrat’s latest report.

Sales of off-plan residential units also dropped by 43.7 percent quarter-on-quarter and 36.9 percent year-on-year. Off-plan sales represented 66 percent of all home sales. Residential rental values were also down 5.2 percent quarter-on-quarter.

Buyers snapped up apartments and villas with a total value of 7 billion UAE dirhams ($1.9 billion), with an average ticket size of 1.57 million dirhams, during Q2.

Researchers at ValuStrat did not say when the slump will ease or sales upticks will start to show, but they warned that the anticipated decline in population numbers due to massive job cuts and expat repatriation could have a negative economic impact.

DUBAI EMERGING AS A TECHNOLOGY HOTSPOT IN THE WORLD

Dubai’s commitment and investment towards creating a knowledge and innovation-based economy has steadily borne fruit, especially in the current environment driven by the Covid pandemic.

From the use of AI in multiple sectors to smart devices to 3-D printing technology, Dubai’s emphasis on innovation has made the Emirate one of the global technology and innovation hubs and a case study on how investment in the sphere of technology can propel economic growth despite a multitude of challenges.

The ubiquitous use of smart helmets by Dubai police that allows scanning the temperatures of hundreds of people within a few minutes is one novel initiative that amplifies Emirate’s ability to leverage technology in dealing with a pandemic-like crisis. “These helmets have thermal sensors and it can record the temperatures of up to 200 people per minute,” say police officers deployed on special pandemic duty. These intelligent helmets, according to them, have two cameras and provide infrafred thermal images from a distance of 5 meters. “We can easily detect those with high temperatures and shift them to the nearest medical facility with the help of paramedics,” they point out.

Dubai’s weapon against Covid-19 is not confined to smart helmets alone. It also used 3D printing technology to manufacture low-cost face shields which played a huge role in arresting the spread of the novel coronavirus. Immensa Labs, headquartered in Dubai, and an undisputed leader in the MENA region in additive manufacture has been on the forefront of Dubai’s fight against Covid-19 by manufacturing and supplying face shields.

It all started in March when Immensa CEO Fahmi Al Shwaa discovered that some people were putting up higher prices for face shields taking advantage of the shortage in supply. “One morning around 11, he asked us whether we could do something about it. And, by evening we 3D printed 10 units of face shields,” recalls Immensa COO Axel Fernandes in an interview with ET NOW. The doctors who saw the product, needless to say, were greatly impressed. “From March till now, we started off with doctors, institutions and hospitals and we went from manufacturing 10 units to a couple of millions within a short duration of time and that was possible only because of 3D printing,” adds Fernandes.
