Art Dubai exhibition delivers $39m boost, creates 23,500 hotel bookings.
Art Dubai has announced that the five-day event, held March 1 to 5 2023, delivered a direct economic impact of AED143m ($39m) to the city.
New figures revealed in an economic impact study by leading independent market research consultancy IPSOS also showed that the renowned art fair attracted 23,500 hotel nights bookings to the city.
The recently announced figures demonstrate a significant rise in economic impact, surpassing the most recent comparable data by more than 55 per cent (compared to AED92m in 2019).
Art Dubai economic impact
The increase reflects Dubai’s progress as a burgeoning cultural and creative hub and highlights its unprecedented growth as a global destination.
Held under the patronage of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the 2023 edition was Art Dubai’s most successful to date, featuring over 130 contemporary and modern exhibitors from more than 40 countries and the strongest-ever participation of regional and international institutional representatives.
Hala Badri, Director General of the city Culture and Arts Authority, said the emirate is experiencing a comprehensive creative and cultural movement, which is playing a pivotal role in realising Dubai’s cultural vision of establishing the emirate as a global centre for culture, an incubator for creativity and a thriving hub for talent.
They said: “At Dubai Culture, we are keen on supporting the cultural and arts sector in the emirate by adopting innovative methods capable of attracting talent and art enthusiasts, in addition to providing creative platforms that allow artists to express their ideas and expand their creative contributions that enrich Dubai’s art scene.
“The remarkable successes achieved by the 16th edition of the Art Dubai exhibition reflect Dubai’s global position as a vital hub for artistic and creative events.
“Art Dubai has matured and developed into a unique moment in the international art calendar, convening Dubai’s brightest and best cultural and artistic minds each year.
“The figures announced in the economic impact report further underline the importance of world-class cultural programming in attracting people worldwide to this unique city.”
Benedetta Ghione, Executive Director, said: “The published economic impact data serves to underscore Dubai’s continued growth and development as one of the major cultural centres of the art world and the cultural capital of the Global South.
“2023 was Art Dubai’s most successful to date, and our 2024 edition will continue to build on the reputation we have nurtured over the past two decades, reinforcing our unique position in the art market and continuing to push the boundaries of what an art fair can do.”
The major art event is the premier platform to see and buy art from the Global South. Across contemporary, modern and digital gallery sections, annual artist commissions and year-round collector and education programmes, it champions art and artists.
It has established itself as a regional cultural hub and an increasingly important meeting point for the Global South’s art world.
The city has experienced rapid growth over the past 10 years, and the fair now welcomes top collecting and institutional audiences from the UAE, the region and internationally.
The event, held in partnership with A.R.M. Holding, has gained sponsorship from Julius Baer, a Swiss Wealth Management Group.
The fair has also garnered support from HUNA, a culturally-rich developer and partner. The Culture and Arts Authority serves as the fair’s strategic partner, and Madinat Jumeirah provides a stunning venue for the event.
The 2024 edition will take place at Madinat Jumeirah from March 1 to 3, with previews on 28 and 29 February.
‘Through Rocket, James Gunn has put a face, a name, and a personality on the millions of vulnerable animals being cycled through laboratories as we speak,’ Peta spokesperson said.

In the Marvel franchise’s third instalment (released 5 May), viewers a shown a flashback of Rocket – the anthropomorphic raccoon voiced by Bradley Cooper – being tortured by the High Evolutionary
The film’s villain performed extensive medical procedures on Rocket to turn him into a sentient, powerful weapon.
When Nebula (Karen Gillan) watches the recordings of Rocket’s past, she says they are worse than any torture Thanos had put her through.
“Through Rocket, James Gunn has put a face, a name, and a personality on the millions of vulnerable animals being cycled through laboratories as we speak,” Peta Senior Vice President Lisa Lange said in a statement shared Monday (8 May).
“Peta is celebrating this as the best animal rights film of the year for helping audiences see animals as individuals and suggesting that just because we can experiment on them doesn’t mean that we should.”
In the release, which calls the film an “animal rights masterpiece”, Peta alleges that “like Rocket’s friends Lylla, Teefs, and Floor, most animals used in laboratories are killed after enduring a lifetime of suffering”.
The organisation recently condemned The Rings of Power after a horse died on the set of the Lord of the Rings spin-off.
A spokesperson for Amazon Studios shared that the horse died of a cardiac arrest. “It seems that living underground with the orcs is par for the course for the producers of The Rings of Power, because they have the option to use CGI, mechanical rigs and other humane methods,” Lange said in a statement at the time.

Just when you think you’re done watching increasingly tangled blockbuster franchises that have long overstayed their welcome, along comes “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” an action-comedy caper based on the most popular tabletop role-playing game ever, upending all your misgivings.Yes, it’s got the familiar Marvel brand of humor down to a pat with funny zings and quips flying at you every minute of its over two-hour-long runtime, but in this movie, it works in its favor
For anyone familiar with playing Dungeons & Dragons, a game where friends get together to tell fantastical stories with the help of complex rules and a lot of odd-shaped dice, you’ll know that humor and fun are baked into its very DNA.
You could be fighting the scariest monster or playacting a tragic backstory, but, above the table, you’re still goofing off with your friends while stuffing your face with snacks.
Directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein show that they both recognize and respect this inherent quality of the game and turn the dial to 11 on it, and, voila, you have a perfect adaptation that follows a motley crew of almost-heroes who need to steal a powerful artifact from an evil wizard to save the world.
But what about the people who’ve never played D&D, you ask? If you don’t know your Magic Missile from your Misty Step or your Mordenkainen from your Elminster, we’re happy to report that “Honor Among Thieves” still works for you.
While fans will no doubt spend the length of the movie trying to spot spells and parse through lore drops, the movie stands on its two feet, even if the viewer can make no meaningful connection to a name like Baldur’s Gate (a famous campaign setting in the game, which has also spawned several video games).
This is mostly thanks to the film’s cast, who form the scrappy little adventuring party of “Honor Among Thieves.” The band of misfits is led by Chris Pine’s charismatic bard, Edgin. A better casting choice could not have been made for this role, and Pine turns on his lovable allure to good effect.Michelle Rodriguez is the muscle of the group, as the formidable barbarian Holga. And bringing up the rear of the group are Simon, the sorcerer with self-esteem issues, played to perfection by Justice Smith, and Doric, the tiefling druid who can wildshape herself into both cute woodland creatures as well as massive monstrosities, played by Sophia Lillis.
But, as a surprise to probably no one, “Bridgerton” breakout star Rege-Jean Page is the scene-stealer of this movie as the righteous paladin Xenk. His guileless, honorable conduct and bravery serve as a foil to the party’s shenanigans.
And rounding out the cast is Hugh Grant who looks like he’s having the most fun playing Forge Fitzwilliam, the current smarmy leader of Neverwinter.
Apart from the stellar cast, the film deals with the concept of found family in a way that feels fresh and real. Especially the friendship between Pine’s Edgin and Rodriguez’s Holga is a unique take on platonic relationships that viewers might appreciate and that feels genuinely lived-in and authentic.
And that’s it, really. If you’re looking for hijinks, laughter and feel-good vibes that will follow you long after you’ve left the theater, “Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” is for you.
