Look: Miss Universe contestant dresses up as ‘bitcoin’ at beauty pageant

Miss El Salvadore’s costume caught the attention of the online Bitcoin community, with many pledging their support and rooting for her victory.

A Miss Universe contestant from El Salvador strutted onto stage this week wearing a bitcoin-inspired gold bodysuit, a glittering tribute to her country becoming the world’s first to adopt the crypto-currency as legal tender two years ago.

Alejandra Guajardo, the Salvadoran beauty queen set to compete at the global contest’s 71st annual event in New Orleans, shared photos and videos of herself in the costume on Instagram late Wednesday, complete with gold booted stilettos. In her post’s caption, Guajardo praised her homeland as “a country with a true vision of positive change for the future” while pointing to the government’s much-criticized decision to adopt bitcoin as legal currency in 2021 alongside the US dollar.Designed by fellow Salvadoran Francisco Guerrero for the “national costume” stage of the competition, the currency-themed outfit includes a staff topped with a golden bitcoin and a huge colon coin strapped to her back ringed by cacao beans.

The colon was the local currency for about a century ending in 2021, when the US dollar was adopted; in ancient times cacao was used as money across mesoamerica.

Guajardo showed off the eye-catching fashion during a preliminary session ahead of the pageant’s formal start this Saturday.

Guajardo’s costume caught the attention of the online Bitcoin community on Thursday, with many pledging their support and rooting for her victory.

To have a chance in the pageant, she must fare much better than bitcoin’s recent performance.

Last year, bitcoin’s value plunged over 60 per cent, even as Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele continued to hype buying “the dip” to boost the government’s bitcoin reserves.

Bukele has made no secret of his ambition to make the Central American nation a crypto hub, complete with a bitcoin “city,” though adoption of the coin has faltered since being introduced as an official currency.

Second-hand book fair in Dubai with prices from Dh3 to Dh10

l Safa Art and Design Library is hosting a second-hand book fair over the holidays.

The event, which runs until Tuesday, was created to spread cultural awareness among the public by trying to promote reading as a lifestyle. The initiative is part of the Dubai Public Libraries cultural programme.

There are a number of second-hand books on sale, suitable for all age groups, with symbolic prices ranging from Dh3 to Dh10.

The fair is open daily from 8am to 8pm. The project is one that highlights Dubai Culture’s compliance with the National Literacy Strategy 2016-2026, which aims to promote cultural values in society and support all aspects of culture including the arts and literature.

Visiting the tucked-away library

Al Safa Art and Design Library was originally opened in 1989 but was revamped in 2019 with new stylish architecture and an invitingopen-plan layout that encourages visitors to sit, socialise and stay put.

The building stands out as a stark grey beacon of modernity against an older, coral-coloured backdrop, with foliage and a flyover almost obscuring it from view. But its sharp, angular shape catches your eye.

Beyond the floor-to-ceiling glass doors, a cafe sits tucked away to the left. A vast expanse of low-lying shelves with a selection of books in Arabic and English is ahead. You can read these inside the space but, unlike traditional libraries, you cannot take them home.

AN INTERVIEW WITH A MEXICAN PROMISING BEAUTY: VIVIAN REYNOLDS in DUBAI

A young Mexican called Vivian Reynolds was crowned on Saturday, November 28, 2021, as International Top Model 2021 in Dubai, at a gala held at a luxury hotel in Creek Dubai. We believe we need to support and nurture talent and this girl has tons of it. Today we ask her some questions about modeling, and how was the experience of her first coronation.

THE INTERVIEW: VIVIAN REYNOLDS

Hi Vivian, tell us what is this International Top Model event in Dubai about?

This was the first edition of an International Modeling event in the United Arab Emirates. Held under the production of Prodigy Global Network and whose main objective is to discover and recognize new talents in the modeling industry.

How was your participation in this great Gala?

During the event, we carried out catwalks with four different styles. First, in the sustainability category, I modeled a wonderful suit alluding to the Phoenix bird, a creation by Darwin Perez. This look was the winner of the night. Later it was the category of black dress – creative. For it, I wore a modern dress with lace and transparency, with a highlight of a flower on the shoulder. A beautiful creation of the designer Aaronic Atelier. A catwalk with a sports brand followed. And to close, I wore a charming long dress, in a purple tone and crystals, the creation of designer Miley Cao.

How many countries were competing in the grand final?

It was a spectacular night and I achieved this triumph among finalists representing Russia, the Philippines, India, Kenya, and Sri Lanka.

You received several bands, please explain what they are about?

Without a doubt, it was a good night for me. I was fortunate to receive several recognitions. First as Senorita fotogenia, best photo session in boxing, best editorial. Also, I was named ambassador of the innovative sports brand KA-1.

How do you feel like the big winner of this event?

There are no words to describe the feeling! The moment when they said “Vivian Reynolds of Mexico” is the winner of the International Top Model 2021 in Dubai, I was over the moon. I am beyond happy and super grateful. None of this could have been possible without the support of the professionals of the production team, the great support of my family, even through social networks. Thanks to all of those who gave me their support and encouraged me to give my best during the three months that this great event lasted. Thank you very much to all “Viva Mexico”.

brian-sostrom

I grew up in small rural towns in the Pacific Northwest. My father was an engineer for the National Forest Service and we frequently relocated for his work. All of my finest memories revolve around the tranquility of nature and the peace and solitude that I found there.

My father has always painted, at least since I’ve been around. I would watch him working on his homemade easel wishing I could do the same. When I was 9 years old, my parents purchased a hobby set of acrylic paints for me and I was never far from them. When I went to college at Washington State University, I experimented with all types of mediums and began learning about computer generated art and design.

Digital art was an interesting pursuit and kept me afloat financially for a few years. My passion was and remains physical painting. Acrylics have lured me back with their ever-expanding catalog of hues and mediums. For the past 16 plus years I have experimented with many materials in addition to acrylic paints. I keep changing the way I work by trying to create art that is not only beautiful but also visually unique. It is a task that is exceedingly difficult but one of the most important mantras I have.

I participate in solo shows and group shows throughout the United States. I sell and ship art worldwide.
