Dubai World Cup: Bhupat’s crew out to dance on the big night

He has nine runners — two in Dubai World Cup, three each in Dubai Golden Shaheen and Godolphin Mile and one in A.l Quoz Sprint

Bhupat Seemar, champion trainer of the UAE in his rookie year 2021-22, is just one night away from a possible second straight crown.

‘Rookie’ would be a misnomer for the 46-year-old Bhupat. He has been with horses almost all his life, and trained in the US for seven years at age 21 before coming to the UAE and joining his uncle Satish, one of the most successful trainers in the UAE.

A change of roles two years ago saw Bhupat assuming the main responsibilities at Zabeel Stables, and it’s been a seamless transition. Last season, his horses won 47 races and he was the runaway champion trainer. This season, he trails Doug Watson’s 38 wins by one.

On Saturday night, Seemar potentially has the chance to win four races. He has nine runners — two in Dubai World Cup, three each in Dubai Golden Shaheen and Godolphin Mile and one in Al Quoz Sprint.

We got his thoughts on his runners…

Bendoog (Dubai World Cup): He has Christophe Soumillon riding, who has won a few World Cups and knows his way around here. So, we’ve got a great jockey on him. The horse is doing great. I can’t say that ‘we’re in it to win it’. You have to be realistic. Hopefully, we will get a good race.

He broke his maiden in Dubai last year and is a big, massive horse and he kept on improving all year. He is by a great sire and got a great owner behind him. Everything is going well for him, and he is improving with every race.

Remorse (Dubai World Cup): He ran really well last year. He was drawn 11 which was not bad because he’s a smallish horse and doesn’t like much kickback. That outside draw helped him and he was still finishing in the race, which is very encouraging. He was, I think, four-and-a-half length behind (champion) Country Grammer.

Switzerland (Dubai Golden Shaheen): He’s getting old and doing everything right. There was no point putting too much mileage on his legs. He’s had a nice break. He’s fresh, and he runs well when fresh. There’s only one prep run and he won that impressively. If all goes well, we’re hoping for a good run. Tadhg O’Shea knows him very well. He’s got a great finish on him. If he can get a good position in the race, they go fast at finishing.

Sound Money (Dubai Golden Shaheen): He has only been here this year is going to be much-improved horse next year, because all these American horses improve with time. He had a great performance on his only start. And he’s actually improved since then. My only worry is sometimes when you get these horses and they run after a long time…in America, they call it the bounce effect. I hope that doesn’t happen because he’s running after three weeks. But he’s not showing any signs of that.

Tuz (Dubai Golden Shaheen): He’s been a talented horse. And I’ve been bragging about him all the time. But I think it’s probably a trainer error that we were running him a bit too far. We brought him back in distance in 2021 and we ran him at a mile and he won. So, we kept him at a mile. I was like, he’s got too much speed. He is actually a sprinter.

Logo Hunter (Al Quoz Sprint): When we ran him the last time (Group 2 Blue Point Sprint on February 10), he’d only been in our stable for about 15 days. And from then to now, what I see in the mornings, he is a whole different animal. When he came, he was a bit of a woolly bear. He’s now got the Dubai coat on him. He is shining and his gallops are good. He should probably give a good account.

Discovery Island (Godolphin Mile): On form, looks like he’s going to be the best of our three in the race. Unfortunately, we’re drawn out in the carpark. Again, it might not be too bad a draw for him because he’s a little bit slow out of the gate. He doesn’t want too much kickback on him. You know, he makes it hard for himself. But he’s a very, very good horse. He’s doing everything right.

Law Of Peace (Godolphin Mile): Law of Peace is one of those sleepers who sits at the back. Richie will have to have ice on his bones and sit in the back and chill. And he just runs home.

Royal Mews (Godolphin Mile): Finished third to Discovery Island in the Group 3 Burj Nahaar race on Super Saturday. He had to go around everybody and do it the hard way. Royal Mews is one of those horses who puts himself in a race. Draw really doesn’t matter to him. But it’s a good thing that he’s got draw three. He’s got plenty of early tactical speed and he can sit in a race he can do whatever needs to.

Novak Djokovic hails Dubai’s ‘champion mentality’, calls city his ‘second home’

The 22-time Grand Slam winner also praised the emirate’s ‘incredible and rapid growth’.

World No. 1 men’s tennis player Novak Djokovic described Dubai as his “second home” and hailed its winning mentality at Dubai Future District Fund’s (DFDF) annual general meeting today.

The Serbian tennis player praised the emirate’s “incredible and rapid growth” in a conversation with Becky Anderson, Managing Editor at CNN Abu Dhabi & Anchor, at the Museum of the Future. The 22-time Grand Slam winner lauded Dubai and the UAE’s “culture of innovation” which has had a major positive impact around the world.

“I want to have Dubai as a base for my business and innovation,” the 35-year-old said in a fireside chat titled ‘Belief to Champion’. “I love the champion mentality here in Dubai. I love that people here want to be the best in the world. And I’m sure that with this kind of mentality and approach, they will become the leaders.”

In a wide-ranging discussion, Djokovic spoke on the “trials and tribulations” he faced as a young child growing up in conflict-hit Serbia, and how those experiences helped him become one of greatest-ever men’s tennis players.

“I was a young boy who dared to dream big and believe that those dreams would come true,” he added. “Obviously coming from a war-torn country in the 90s, it wasn’t easy, and there was a lot of adversity in society and challenges that my family had to face to support and fund the career of a tennis player.

“It has had a great influence on my character. Waiting in line for several hours from 6am to have a piece of bread that we would all share. It was hard, but at the same time I look back and reflect on that as a very important stage in my life.”

UAE to take part in Masters Over 50s Cricket World Cup in South Africa

The 18-member will be led by Syed Rafiullah and also includes Khurram Khan, who was the skipper of the UAE side in the 2015 edition of the ICC World Cup.

Fourteen of the top cricket playing nations and a few Associate members will soon be seen taking on each other in the Masters Over 50s Cricket World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa.

A team of senior cricketers from the UAE, which is being sponsored by Chandan Ahuja and Mili Ahuja of Falcon Eye Cyber Security, based in Dubai, are also ready to tackle the well-established tough teams in their group.

Syed Rafiullah who captained the Pakistan University team and who has participated in two of the previous Masters World Cup for Canada in 2018 and 2020, will be leading the Masters UAE team.

Supporting him will be some very famous and well-known players like Ali Akbar Rana and Vijay Mehra, who have also represented the UAE in the ICC World Cup tournament in 1994, whilst Khurram Khan was the skipper of the UAE side in the 2015 edition.

The other well-known members of this team who also have many first-class representations between them are Ambey Parwatkar, Biju Nair, Mohammad Shafique, Shahzad Ahmad, Tanvir Ghani, Narayanan Krishnan, Abhilash Devarajan, John Flory, Faisal Maqsood, Rehan Khan, Naveed Sehrai, Imran Qazmi, Asif Butt and Asad Rizvi complementing the squad.

At the capping ceremony held at Taj Dubai Downtown, Mili Ahuja, Founder and Director of Falcon Eye Cyber Security welcomed the distinguished dignitaries, celebrated guests, and the 18-member team embarking on their maiden journey for the IMCC Masters Over 50 Men’s World Cup in South Africa.

“It is our humble privilege to support the team from UAE in their attempt to bring the Masters World Cup home,” Mili said.

“I choose not to steal the thunder away from this fabulous group of people who are doing all that is necessary, bringing together folks from different countries and cultures in the true UAE spirit and exhibit the same in Cape Town. Kudos to the team of over 50s who have largely self-funded this maiden World Cup participation. This, I hear, is the third and the biggest Masters World Cup so far, with a total of 14 teams in two pools of seven each. Wishing this team the absolute best of luck from me and everyone at Falcon Eye Cyber Security,” she added.

Chandan Ahuja further added: “I have been a banker by profession and a cricketer by passion. I am sure everyone here has played some form of cricket in the past, some more competitive than others. A cricketer, in fact, a sportsman, never lives alone. He or she has their mates and friends that they play with; and compete against.

“As a start-up ourselves now and as a gesture of one budding start-up to another, we extended our guidance and support to this brilliant Masters Over 50s cricket team.”

General Brigadier Makki Salman Ahmed Salman of Dubai Police was the guest of honour along with Khalid Al Haj Nasir and he said: “I congratulate the team members and wish them all the success in this tough competition. I ask them to play hard but play fair and maintain the traditions of the UAE and keep the flag flying high for the UAE in South Africa.”

Mazhar Khan, the general manager of the Sharjah Stadium, who is a very, very senior cricketer and top ranked official in the UAE cricket scene since five decades, also wished the team all the success and to give all their best in this tournament.

Mohamed Lokhandwala a former cricketer and cricket official who was the MC at the function elaborated on the tournament saying: “Former international and first-class cricketers from India, Pakistan, West Indies, Sri Lanka, South Africa, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Namibia, UAE, United States of America, Canada and Wales are all geared up and most have already reached the coastal city of Cape Town.

“This beautiful city ringed by the scenic Table Top Mountain shrouded in white clouds is at the southern most tip of the world at Cape Point and will be hosting the Seniors World Cup with each team playing six games in the 45 overs format, designed specially for the Masters tournament. Top four teams will qualify for the semifinals, while the losers will participate in a Plate event.”General Brigadier Makki Salman Ahmed Salman, Khalid Al Haj Nasir, Chandan Ahuja, Mili Ahuja, Mazhar Khan and CTK Nasir presented the players with their IMCC Masters World Cup caps.

Dubai World Cup: De Vries embraces ageless mindset in pursuit of his dream

At 53, the Dutchman aims to become the oldest winner of the centrepiece onboard Salute The Soldier.

When Frankie Dettori won the 2022 Dubai World Cup aboard Country Grammer at the age of 51, not only did he make history as the oldest jockey to win the $ 12 million contest, but he also delivered a powerful statement that caught the attention of the racing world.

The Italian demonstrated that if you have hunger and passion, your motivation will help you overcome the odds and achieve even the impossible.Even as Dettori returns to his happy hunting ground at Meydan Racecourse this month, hoping to rewrite the record books one more time, there is another jockey lurking who can steal his thunder and further rewrite the record he set 12 months ago.

Should he continue to ride the crest of a wave that saw him snatch two major victories on Super Saturday, last week’s dress rehearsal for the Dubai World Cup, Adrie de Vries is set to claim his own place in the record books.

A youthful 53, the classy Dutch rider has shown no signs of slowing down, and on the contrary, appears to be at the peak of his silken powers.

“I’m having more fun than ever, and when you’re having fun, things happen,” De Vries told the

The multiple champion jockey, who is fondly referred to as the “Flying Dutchman,” announced his intentions during Super Saturday when he partnered Go Soldier, Go and Salute The Soldier to victory in the Al Bastakiya and Group 1 Al Maktoum Challenge (Round 3).

Both horses will be aimed at the $2.5m UAE Derby and the $12m Dubai World Cup respectively.

“It’s every jockey’s dream to win a big race on World Cup night,” De Vries said. “I’ve won the Kahayla Classic twice (TM Fred Texas in 2012 and Jaafer 2010) but I’m still hungry for more. Winning a World Cup will be a dream come true.

“But even if I win any race on the day, it would be great.”

The humility that he displays makes De Vries more likeable and as a result, he is also the go-to rider for many a trainer. From Dubai’s Saeed bin Suroor to South African great Mike De Kock and highly-regarded German handler Markus Klug, he has served them all well.

However, it is with Bahraini owner-trainer Fawzi Nass that De Vries seems to have found his perfect match. Together, they have forged a strong bond of friendship that is built on confidence and trust.

He explains: “I’m not sure why they turn to me, but I can best describe myself as an allrounder. I have a good thing about horses, I can judge a horse and I understand horses pretty well having been around them most of my life.

“Yes, I’ve been fortunate to ride for some of the best trainers in the world and I am grateful for their support as well.

“It was during a stint in Bahrain that I got to know Fawzi and the relationship just got stronger and stronger and I was riding some nice winners for him as well. Wins like Jordan Sport, who won the Mahab Al Shimaal in 2018, and Salute the Soldier, who has won six times in Dubai, have further strengthened our partnership.

“Fawzi is a fantastic man to ride for,” added De Vries. “He lets you get on with it and do your job. He doesn’t give too many orders. The great thing about him is he’s a great horseman himself and a good friend. A gentleman. We have a long relationship and let’s hope it continues in the future.

“With people like Fawzi, you learn a lot,” he adds.”It’s a great experience when you’re sitting on horses, riding for a good trainer. It’s special.”

De Vries recalls how it all began and how he, and his family, have come to love the UAE.

“I came here first, 35 years ago, when a friend sold a little Arabian horse to Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan (Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE and Minister of Presidential Affairs).” he says. “I was 17 years old at the time.”

“I liked the UAE from the start. I like the sport here, I love the country and I love the nice weather. My family enjoys coming over here as well..

“But, more importantly, you get a lot of respect and support from owners and trainers in the UAE and you get to ride plenty of good horses,” he adds.

“I enjoy this lifestyle and the way they treat horses over here. It’s always been a great experience to come here. At this point, I’m taking it year by year and hoping that the good horses keep coming along in the future. I can see myself riding for as long as I can.”

Barbora Krejcikova scores stunning win over Iga Swiatek to triumph in Dubai

The Czech followed up her surprise wins over Jessica Pegula and Aryna Sabalenka with an even bigger upset.

Barbora Krejcikova completed a clean sweep of the world’s top three players with a stunning victory over top-ranked Iga Swiatek in the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships final on Saturday.

The Czech followed up her surprise wins over Jessica Pegula and Aryna Sabalenka – the world number three and two respectively – this week with an even bigger upset as she shocked Swiatek 6-4 6-2 in 91 minutes.

In doing so, the former French Open champion joined elite company with Steffi Graf, Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Sabalenka the only other players to have beaten the top three-ranked players in a tournament.

Krejcikova, herself a former world number two but now ranked 30th, was strong on the Swiatek serve but the Pole twice recovered from breaks in a tight first set.

Krejcikova took firm control with another decisive break to lead 5-4 in the first set and then confidently closed out victory in the second.

Man City crush Chelsea in FA Cup, Villa upset by Stevenage

Pep Guardiola made seven changes from the City side that won 1-0 at Chelsea on Thursday. But City were still far too dynamic for the struggling Blues.

Manchester City powered to a second victory against troubled Chelsea in the space of four days as Riyad Mahrez inspired a 4-0 rout in the FA Cup third round, while Aston Villa crashed to a 2-1 defeat against fourth tier Stevenage on Sunday.

After Premier League sides Newcastle, Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth were humiliated by lower-league opposition on Saturday, Unai Emery’s Villa were rocked by Stevenage’s two-goal blast in the final minutes.

Premier League champions City rarely suffer such humiliation and they made the strongest possible start by dismissing Chelsea with contemptuous ease at the Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola made seven changes from the City side that won 1-0 at Chelsea in the Premier League on Thursday.

But City were still far too dynamic for struggling Chelsea as Mahrez struck with a brilliant free-kick and a late penalty, with Julian Alvarez and Phil Foden also scoring.

In the fourth round, City will host Premier League leaders Arsenal or third- tier Oxford, who meet on Monday.

City had already eliminated Chelsea from the League Cup this season and the west London club’s first FA Cup third-round exit since 1998 was another blow to a season in danger of spiralling out of control.

While it is probably too early for Chelsea boss Graham Potter to be fearing the sack, just four months after he arrived from Brighton to replace the axed Thomas Tuchel, the 47-year-old might be having a few sleepless nights as he wrestles with his team’s woeful form.

Chelsea have won just three of their last 12 games in all competitions and sit 10th in the Premier League, 10 points adrift of the top four place the club’s American owners would surely have expected Potter to deliver.

Potter will hardly have been comforted by the sound of Chelsea fans chanting Tuchel’s name as they pine for the German who led them to Champions league glory in 2021.

Given Chelsea’s predicament it was curious that Potter elected to make six changes, with Bashir Humphreys given his debut and fellow teenager Lewis Hall also starting.

Mahrez took advantage of Potter’s selection gamble when he drew a rash foul from Hall in the 23rd minute.

The Algeria winger had scored the winner against Chelsea on Thursday and this time he bent a superb free-kick into the top corner from 25 yards.

City’s second goal was a gift from Chelsea forward Kai Havertz, who punched the ball as he challenged Aymeric Laporte at a corner.

Alvarez slotted the 30th minute penalty past Kepa Arrizabalaga despite the Chelsea keeper’s attempt to distract the Argentine World Cup winner by talking to him before the kick.

Chelsea were being torn apart and Foden hit the third goal in the 38th minute, the England forward finishing off Kyle Walker’s cross after Mahrez’s pass unhinged the ragged visitors.

Beaten in the last three FA Cup finals, Chelsea’s misery was compounded in the 85th minute as Mahrez scored from the spot after Kalidou Koulibaly fouled Foden.

Villa boss Unai Emery made eight changes against Stevenage and the team currently second in League Two made the Spaniard pay for his decision.

Morgan Sanson put Villa ahead in the 33rd minute but Jamie Reid equalised with an 88th minute penalty after Leander Dendoncker was sent off for fouling Dean Campbell.

And Campbell sparked wild Stevenage celebrations in the 90th minute when he smashed home from a short corner.

Leeds were fortunate to avoid embarrassment after escaping with a dramatic 2-2 draw at second tier Cardiff.

Jesse Marsch’s side were shocked by first-half goals from Jayden Philogene-Bidace and Sheyi Ojo.

Rodrigo got one back in the 65th minute, then missed a penalty after Cardiff’s Joel Bagan was sent off for handling on the line. With just seconds left, Sonny Perkins spared Rodrigo’s blushes as the 18-year-old substitute netted from close-range to force a replay.

Dubai Super Cup: Arsenal clinch title

Two wins from as many appearances ensured that the Gunners finish at the top of the heap in the four-match, four-team tournament at Al Nasr Club’s Al Maktoum Stadium with eight points.

While the big dream is to win the English Premier League for the first time in 18 years, Arsenal did well to stay focused on immediate targets like winning the Dubai Super Cup 2022.

Two wins from as many appearances ensured that the Gunners finish at the top of the heap in the four-match, four-team tournament at Al Nasr Club’s Al Maktoum Stadium with eight points, which included two bonus points for winning the end-of-match penalty shootouts.

The Rossoneri will take on Liverpool in Friday’s concluding game of a tournament which was devised to help European teams to stay match-fit during the mid-season Winter break.

Arsenal have genuine hopes of winning the Premier League for the first time since the 2003-2004 season having made a solid start to the campaign with 12 wins from 14 matches to sit pretty at the top of the table, five points clear of Manchester City.

It is the first time since the 2007-2008 season that the North London outfit will spend Christmas Day as the outright leaders of the Premier League, the world’s most watched competition which is broadcast to an estimated audience of close to 5 million people.

Arsenal last won the Premier League in 2004 but the team’s Spanish coach Mikel Arteta will be happy with the nosiness end of the Dubai training camp where his squad held their own during a sustained second-half onslaught by the Italians who managed to pull one back through a brilliant Fikayo Tomori header following a scathing free-kick from Sandro Tonali in the 78th minute of the game.

Milan’s Bosnian midfielder came dangerously close to forcing the match into sudden death but was just off the mark with his attempt on goal.

Arsenal’s attacking midfield, Fabio Vieira, who had a good game, worked his way through the Italian side’s defence before telegraphing the ball to Nelson whose powerful first-timer was always going to find its intended target, despite some flying limbs.

Earlier, Martin Odegaard opened the scoring for Arsenal when he cleared the free-kick wall and sent his shot into the near top corner of the net well out of reach of Milan’s flat-footed Romanian keeper Ciprian Tătărușanu.

The English side kept the pressure on their opponents with deft passes and control of the midfield before they went 2-0 up when Reiss Nelson scored with the help of a big deflection.

Although they appeared to ease thing up a bit Arsenal showed just why they have recorded five wins from their last six matches and must now fancy themselves of having a real shot at Premiership glory.

The Gunners travel back to the UK where they will play Juventus in another friendly at the Emirates Stadium next weekend before they engage West Ham United (16th in the table) in a Boxing Day clash.

On the other hand Milan have scored three wins, one loss and a draw from their four recent fixtures.

Several players who were in Qatar on World Cup duty have now rejoined the squad in Dubai before they board a plane to Heathrow.

Milan’s Pierre Kalulu summed up Tuesday’s match when he told Dubai Sports Channel: “Obviously we wanted to win this, but we should be happy with the way we played against a top team like Arsenal.

My job in Formula 1: The helmet manager

I am a racing manager at Bell Helmets, working with F1 drivers. My job is to prepare helmets for all of our drivers and try to find new ones, who want to use Bell helmets in Formula 1.

This year we work in F1 with Lewis Hamilton, Lando Norris, Kimi Raikkonen, Antonio Giovinazzi, George Russell, Nicolas Latifi, Romain Grosjean, Kevin Magnussen, Esteban Ocon, Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez.

We work closely with drivers on an individual basis to give them the best package possible regarding cooling and visibility. Plus we liaise with the teams, always trying to improve the aero package and make the car faster, even using small spoilers and wings on the helmet. We can even develop some aero parts together with engineers.

My race weekend schedule…
Usually I leave home on Wednesday night to make sure I’m at the track early in the morning on Thursday. Most of the time I carry up to eight of the drivers’ helmets with me, which we couldn’t send to the track with their teams for various reasons.

My first job is to prepare all the helmets for the weekend. Normally I would ready for each driver two helmets for dry weather and one for wet. If the forecast says it is going to be rainy weekend, I’d make it the other way around.

The two dry helmets have different visors, one of them is dark. For example in Barcelona when the sun is very low, you just cannot see the track properly with a normal one.

Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup: Second podium of the season for Clément Mateu at the Hungaroring

After two consecutive weekends in Austria, Clément Mateu headed to Hungary to compete in the third round of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup.

With a podium finish last week, Clément Mateu as well as the HEXIS and Martinet by Almeras teams are calmly approaching the Hungarian weekend. Hostilities kick off on Friday with a rainy free practice session. The driver of the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup N. 21 quickly found his marks on the Hungarian turnstile and set the 3rd fastest time in the Pro-Am class.

Qualifying takes place the next day on a dry track. The first part of the session is not optimal, but the boss of the HEXIS group does not let himself be defeated and improves his first two partials on his second set of tires, but the time lost in the third sector costs him the 2nd Pro- time. Am and he had to settle for the 4th fastest time in 1: 49.786.

The weather conditions were very uncertain on Sunday but the race was still contested on a dry track. From 4th Pro-Am place on the grid, Clément Mateu has his competitors in sight. A few laps later, his direct competitor, Philipp Sager, gets trapped on the wet astroturf and hits the wall at the exit of the last corner. The race is then neutralized. On the restart, Clément Mateu managed to keep pace with his teammate at Martinet by Alméras, Stéphane Denoual, and finished on the third step of the Pro-Am podium.

This second podium in a row allows the HEXIS driver to make a good accounting operation in the championship. It will return to the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup paddock from July 31 to August 2, on the Silverstone circuit.

Results and times
Free practice: # 21 – P19 (2: 05.886)
Qualifying: # 21 – P22 (1: 49.786)
Race: # 21 – P18 (29: 10.063)

Pro-Am Ranking: 1. Roar LINDLAND – 70 pts; 2. Clément MATEU – 48 pts; 3. Philipp SAGER – 45 pts; 4. Philippe HAEZEBROUCK – 38 pts: 5. Stéphane DENOUAL – 37 pts; 6. Roland BERVILLE – 14 pts…

Clément Mateu, manager of HEXIS and driver of the # 21 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup: “It’s a good weekend overall. I am not yet very satisfied with the pure performance but the race went well with this new podium. The first third of the season is completed, there are positive points and our roadmap is being respected. We will take advantage of these elements to be competitive at Silverstone and try to get closer to Roar Lindland. The team’s results are very positive both in Pro and in the Rookies. “
