American Hospital Dubai has achieved a new milestone in robotic surgery with the region’s first robotic breast surgery performed by a female robotic surgeon, Dr Marian Khatib.
A Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon and Director of Breast Surgery at American Hospital Dubai, Dr Marian has been at the forefront of advancing breast health and cancer care. She has extensive expertise in oncoplastic and reconstructive breast surgery, along with a strong commitment to patient-centred care and innovative surgical techniques.
Innovative technique
The procedure, a robotic mastectomy or breast removal, is an advanced and innovative technique particularly beneficial for patients diagnosed with breast cancer or requiring a risk-reducing mastectomy due to genetic mutations.
Dr Marian performed the minimally invasive procedure, also known as robotic-assisted nipple-sparing mastectomy, using the Da Vinci Robotic System.
This technique allows for greater surgical precision and involves making small incisions away from the breast surface to remove the affected breast tissue, followed by breast reconstruction, resulting in virtually scar-free breasts and superior aesthetic outcomes.
Oncologic safety with enhanced cosmetic results
“Patients benefit from less postoperative pain, faster recovery, with a reduced risk of complications, such as infection or necrosis of the skin and nipple,” says Dr Marian. “This technique represents a significant advancement in breast cancer surgery and reconstruction, combining oncologic safety with enhanced cosmetic results.
“American Hospital Dubai is proud to be Dubai’s first medical facility to fully explore robotic surgery’s advantages, earning us a leading place in Dubai’s robotic surgery era,” added Dr Marian.
Centre of Excellence in Robotic Surgery
The region’s first private healthcare provider to install the fourth-generation Da Vinci Robotic System, American Hospital Dubai’s Centre of Excellence in Robotic Surgery (COERS) is the region’s first private healthcare facility to receive accreditation from the US-based Surgical Review Corporation (SRC).
“American Hospital Dubai is proud of achieving another milestone in our robotic surgery excellence with the first robotic breast surgery by a female robotic surgeon,” says Sherif Beshara, Group CEO of American Hospital Dubai. “This is a first for the region.
