Arab Health 2025: UAE announces facial scanning for instant health checks on smartphone

Instead of visiting a lab, patients in the UAE will soon be able to check their vital health indicators instantly using just their smartphones. The AI-powered system was announced by the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) at Arab Health 2025 in Dubai.

The new technology, called ‘Biosigns’, an innovative artificial intelligence (AI) system that transforms smartphones and tablets into personal health monitoring devices, promises to transform the way residents track their health.

Developed as part of MoHAP’s efforts to modernise the healthcare system, Biosigns allows smartphone cameras to measure vital signs such as cholesterol, haemoglobin, heart rate, blood pressure, and even stress levels within seconds. The system, approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), analyses facial images to detect subtle changes in skin colour and blood flow beneath the skin, providing accurate real-time health readings, according to MoHAP.

The Biosigns technology is designed to make health monitoring more accessible, reducing the need for frequent lab visits and costly medical tests. With results available instantly through a smartphone app or web platform, users can keep track of their health effortlessly.

Unlike traditional devices, which require blood samples or external sensors, Biosigns relies solely on a smartphone camera, making it a convenient and cost-effective alternative. The system is expected to integrate with approved health applications in the UAE, connecting directly to the country’s unified health record system.

By enabling individuals to monitor their health at home, the technology supports early detection of potential health issues, allowing for timely medical intervention and reducing pressure on healthcare facilities.

Enhancing preventive healthcare

Abdullah Ahli, Acting Assistant Undersecretary for the Support Services Sector at MoHAP, said: “[Biosigns] will not only enhance preventive and proactive healthcare, and improve the efficiency and quality of health services, but will also advance the digital health data system, foster innovation in the healthcare sector, and promote customer experiences while raising health awareness.”

Ahli highlighted that the technology paves the way for significant developments in smart medical diagnostics, offering a comprehensive system that combines the precision of laboratory measurements with the convenience of daily use. He said the technology provides every person with an effective tool to manage their health, adding that the ministry is committed to making the most of artificial intelligence technologies to improve the overall quality of life.

Sarah bin Shaheen, Director of the Smart Health Department, said that the AI-powered technology provides a comprehensive and trustworthy health monitoring system that gives users accurate and comprehensive reports on their health conditions. This makes it easier to prescribe and monitor treatments and enables the identification of medicalrequirements.
“The technology delivers immediate and accurate results based on numerous vital indicators, with real-time data processing and analysis, while adhering to the highest standards of privacy and security,” she added.

Meanwhile, Hamda Al Mazmi, Acting Director of the Information Technology Department, emphasised that the project is built on four main pillars: an integrated digital infrastructure, robust cybersecurity and data protection systems, a connectivity and integration framework with health systems, and a comprehensive big data management and analysis system.

With its rollout expected soon, Biosigns could redefine how people in the UAE manage their health—with greater convenience, cost savings, and improved preventive care.
