Sharjah has shut down two popular kitchens in the city for failing to comply with health standards, the emirate’s municipality announced on Thursday.

These establishments came under scrutiny for not complying with the set requirements and committed many violations that negatively impact consumer health.

The Sharjah City Municipality also said it had conducted 5,500 inspection visits to food establishments, which started before the start of Ramadan and are currently taking place.

Prior to the start of the holy month, the authority had said it would step up monitoring at food outlets throughout Ramadan to protect public health.

Restaurants and eateries were also given the green light to apply for necessary permits for food preparation and sales during daylight hours, including at shopping malls during Ramadan.

Eateries that want to operate during the late night were also urged to apply for permits during the month of Ramadan. Construction contracting companies are not eligible to operate after midnight under this permit.

The authority has also started a Sharjah Food Safety Programme (SFSP), under which all businesses in the emirate receiving training in hygiene and safe food preparation. It also ensures that all outlets are implementing an approved Food Safety Management System.
