Accessories can be super fun, elegant, striking and, in many cases, important for an attire to really establish. But like the fashion industry more widely, which contributes 10% of carbon emissions, accessories consumed without conscience or consultation for the people who made them and their environmental impact is problematic.
From lots of badly made jewels and plastic sunglasses to millions of bags and wallets made with leather or plastic soaked with chemicals, there is a great need for lower impact accessories.
What to consider when looking for sustainable accessories:
From a sustainability perspective, we have sought accessories that use response, materials and high quality fabrics, prioritize ethical labor and have installed green practices in their commercial operations. Supporting brands that are really taking additional measures to reduce their negative impact is essential to promote a more extensive fashion industry more widely.
To help with this (and to reduce the potential for green washing), we have launched a brand rating system where we consider 22 different sustainability relationship criteria, including things such as transparent supply chains, climate impact and chemical use. Beyond key sustainability credentials, also consider:
- How many times will the real accessory use and with what outfits. Accessories that can match multiple attire reduce the need for more accessories and, therefore, are inherently more sustainable. It also costs a basic expense for wear a little more in a well -made piece of cake that will wear a lot is much better than spending on garbage that will end on the landfill after a pair of wear.
- If the piece is driven by a trend that might not last. Opt for pieces that you really love that can overcome trends and last for many years (or even forever) will mean that both the bone spend less the general and less negative impact.
- If you can get the second -hand accessory. Second -hand online stores are a good place to hunt efficiently.
