The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has issued a resolution that prohibits the drilling of new groundwater wells in designated areas throughout the Emirate, as part of the ongoing efforts to preserve the reserves of Groundwater of Abu Dhabi.

Developed in coordination with the relevant authorities, the resolution is under Law No. (5) of 2016, which regulates groundwater management in ABU Dhabi and authorizes the EAD to establish prohibited areas at the time it issues guidelines to maintain the quality of groundwater and regulate consumption.

EAD issues a critical resolution to safeguard Abu Dhabi underground water resources

The resolution describes specific activities allowed within the designated areas, including the drilling, maintenance and deepening of the wells.

It also details the obligations for WEL owners to comply with the license requirements stipulated in the existing law and their executive regulations.

The agency confirmed that it is working with strategic partners to implement the resolution through systematic procedures designed to achieve the desired environmental protection objectives.
